The past decade has seen a rapid increase in the number of subjects being referred for the diagnosis of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) and OSAS is considered as a major contributor for the increased morbidity seen in patients with cardiorespiratory ailments. Nasal continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) is the first line of treatment for these patients. In spite of it giving good relief, a sizable number of them refuse CPAP treatment. The poor compliance is due to the discomfort associated with its usage as well as its prohibitive cost. As there is repetitive nocturnal hypoxia-reoxygenation in OSAS, oxidative stress has been considered as an underlying mechanism for the link between OSAS and cardiorespiratory diseases. Even though the markers for oxidative stress were found to be increased in these patients, whether anti-oxidant intake produces beneficial effects was not demonstrated until recently. The present monograph highlights how oral intake of anti-oxidants improves the quality of sleep in patients with OSAS. It also hints that such a line of treatment may reduce their dependency on CPAP.

Obesity among adolescents and those 19 years and older has tripled for the past 30 years. The Philippines is one such country in the midst of a rapid shift in diet and physical activity patterns that are contributory to rise in obesity, hypertension and related problems. Although many studies have extensively discussed the relationship of obesity to perceived self-esteem of adolescents, there is still a lack of research regarding how obesity influence the self-esteem of nursing students. As future health care providers, they have a critical role to play in the effective implementation of healthy behaviors. As such, they too must develop an understanding and awareness of one’s self and the multifactorial dimensions of their lives in the assumption of roles and responsibilities that may affect health and well-being.By determining the relationship between personal and socioeconomic profile of obese nursing students and their perceived self-esteem, the study would help to examine the psychological well-being of these individuals.

Moreover, other hot topics in osteoarthritis research are discussed, such as: which structures cause pain in knee osteoarthritis? and what are the risk factors to have worsening of lower limb osteoarthritis?

However, there is a lack of study on the relationship between diet and nutritional risk factors of chronic disease among Mongolians. The purpose of this study was to identify major dietary patterns of the Mongolian adults and to examine the dietary patterns as risk factor of overweight and obesity. The cross - sectional study of 420 healthy Mongolian men and women aged 25 years and over was conducted in urban and rural province of Mongolia. The study findings suggest that public health efforts in Mongolia should be targeted at population subgroups in order to address prevailing specific aspects of the Transitional and Traditional dietary patterns, which were found to be associated with increased risk of cardiovascular disease.
Obesity in many Western Countries has cost communities billions of dollars. The balance between the consumption of calories and the metabolism of calories is controlled by the brain with appetite control regulated by interactions between the gut, adipose tissue and the brain. Early in life brain endocrine disorders such as hormone imbalances leads to appetite dysregulation with overeating. In obesity the abnormal metabolism of sugars and fats by the the liver and other tissues leads to hypercholesterolemia and heart disease.
