Acid Mine Drainage (AMD) is produced when sulphide-bearing mine tailings is exposed to oxygen and water and accelerated by naturally-occurring bacteria that assist in the breakdown of sulphide minerals. AMD can severely pollute surface and ground-water, as well as soils. Therefore, mine planners and managers must identify techniques that will minimize AMD impacts on life forms and their environment. In the present study, a site-specific study is carried out to assess the suitability of froth flotation for desulphurization of reactive mine tailings with an Outokumpu flotation unit, type OK0.05 at the Musselwhite Gold Mine, Northern Ontario, Canada, to prevent AMD. During froth flotation of mine tailings, a large quantity of samples must be handled and analyzed for total sulphur content with accuracy and precision. Therefore, a robust, rapid and easy digestion procedure for analysis of total sulphur in mine tailings using Inductively Coupled Plasma is also developed.

The main aim of this study was therefore to develop mathematical models of cash-cost and country-benefit fit on the mine and country variations of gold mining worldwide to enable justification of country regimes as well as selection of investment targets. Multiple linear regression analysis using SPSS was used to generate the two models, cash-cost and country-benefit using a sample of 160 gold mines selected from the top 19 gold rich countries covering a period of 7 years from 2002 to 2008. Observational research was the main approach used to collect data of all variables including cash-cost and country-benefitcas well as mine and country variations.
The Upper Silesian Industrial Region is one of the areas in Poland that has been most changed by human activity. The areas degraded by industrial activities for many decades still make a large part of the region. For this reason, topics related to the change dynamics in the environment affected by coal mine waste dumps are still important and relevant due to the number of mine waste dumps and areas polluted by them. The long-term influence of the mine waste storage on the surrounding water-soil environment and mobility of the pollutants are still investigated by many researchers. Mine waste dumps are the effect of the anthropogenic activity in the coal exploitation areas. They constitute an inherent part of the Upper Silesia landscape. The research was carried out to identify the pollutants and determine the mobility and bioavailability of heavy metals in the areas surrounding mine waste dumps Three areas surrounding mine waste dumps (Halda Ruda, Halda 1/L, Halda 1/R) were chosen. They differed in age, reclamation extent and water-soil environment properties. location, thermal activity, watercourses in their vicinity.
